Things to do in Verona

Venora Opera

As we struggle through the dark, cold and wet days of winter, many people will be no doubt turning their thoughts towards the more cheery idea of a holiday or mini-break. Where better to go than Verona?

The magical Italian city is a favourite getaway, especially for couples who bask in its legendary romance as the home of ill-fated Romeo and Juliet. That's w

hat makes Verona an ideal destination for a Valentine's weekend away.

Naturally, there is more to Verona than the 'star cross'd lovers', but their legacy does have a heavy influence on the city and no visitor should miss seeing Juliet's House - La Casa di Guilietta - as well as her famous balcony. The house was owned by the Dal Cappello (Capulet) family and dates back to around the 13th century. In the courtyard is a statue of Juliet. Tradition dictates that whoever rubs its breast will receive love and luck.

The monument for which Verona is most well known is its Roman Arena, the Arena di Verona. When constructed in the 1st century AD, it hosted wrestling matches among other events. Now, the impressive amphitheatre - which can accommodate an audience of 25,000 - is used for far more salubrious spectacles; including open air concerts and the world-famous Verona Opera.

Widely acknowledged as the finest place to experience opera, the annual events programme runs from June to September. It attracts perennial opera aficionados and first-timers alike to the incredible venue.

For a slightly more modern activity (whizzing forward to the 14th century!), visit the Castelvecchio, a castle that is located on the banks of the Aldige river. Children will love running around and exploring the ramparts, while stunning views can be seen from the adjoining bridge. There is a museum inside the main castle building, which features Renaissance frescoes, jewellery and medieval artefacts. It also houses paintings by Carpaccio, Veronese, Tiepolo, Pisanello and Giovanni Bellini.

These are just three of the more popular attractions in the city; however there are many other sights and activities on offer. Why not come and see Verona for yourself?
