A guide to local transport in amsterdam
Amsterdam has a population of almost seven million people. Being the capital of the Netherlands, the also city attracts a large number of tourists every year. In an effort to cater to the city’s many inhabitants and tourists, the Amsterdam government has organised an excellent transport system and one which is a definite selling point for people considering visiting. Amsterdam is renowned for having an efficient local transport system, well maintained roads and highways with free flowing transport.

Visitors to the city will be able to use trains, trams ferries, taxis and buses to get to places both within the city and to other regions in the country. The buses and trams are among the most popular means of transport in Amsterdam. These services are operated by the Connexxion, Gemeentelijk Vervoerbedrijf and Arriva companies. The city offers over 15 tram routes for visitors to use and connects all the districts in the region.

The rail system operates four metro lines in the city and is fast and efficient. Visitors will find that the rail tickets are a bit more expensive than bus and tram fares. The system though is easy to use and the Amsterdam metro system is a very good way to navigate around the city, to the main attractions.

You can also use the local ferries to take you to various parts of the city. There are three ferry services in Amsterdam, one connecting the IJ to the Amsterdam-Noord while the other two ply across the harbour. There are electrical rental boats and canal cruises that are also available.

A vast majority of the population in Amsterdam use cycles to commute and this is attributed to the government’s eco-friendly campaign launched to ensure that the pollution levels were kept to a minimum. You can rent bicycles from several locations in the centre of the city and prices are quite affordable for daily rental hire. Cycling if you do not have to much to carry with you is really an excellent way to see and enjoy this city and if you can, hire a bicycle for a few days.

If you wish to travel by road, you can make use of the A10 Ringroad that encircles the city and connects it with the country’s freeways. You can also use the S100 Centrumring which is a smaller version of the A10 Ringroad located in the city centre. Driving in Holland is fairly easy and well signposted.
