Getting by in barcelona, spain speaking spanish or catalan
If you are going to Barcelona Spain on vacation or holiday any time soon, you might be concerned about the language. What makes things harder in Barcelona, compared with some other cities, is that you ideally need both Catalan and Spanish speaking ability. Below some tips to getting by in Barcelona with only the English speaking language.
1. Start dating a local girl or guy and make sure their English and translation skills are very good at the being of the relationship. You will have a permanent translator on hand and whether Spanish or Catalan is used, you will be in control.
2. Hang out with fellow English speakers. Spend time in Irish and English pubs such as the Michael Collins in Sagrada Familia and socialise in areas such as Las Ramblas which are dedicated to tourists.
3. Just do not worry about what people are saying and just speak English back to them. Get used to using hand signals and learn how to point directly at things. If you are in a res
4. Buy a Pictionary (a dictionary which uses pictures). A Pictionary is a wonderful and fun way to communicate in any language. If you want chicken in the restaurant point to the chicken picture. If you want directions to the beach, show them the picture of the beach. The directions may come back to you in Spanish or Catalan but just follow their hand signals and you will at least get to know the general direction.
5. Staying in your Barcelona apartment will also mean you avoid the language problems. You have the Internet, satellite TV and beer in the fridge and even Twitter. There is no need to socialise anymore. Life is good.
6. Well, if you really feel the need to try and fit in a little, even though you can get by in English, why not still at least try and learn even 5 words of Spanish. Just knowing how to say, please, thank you and a few greetings, can really make a different because the locals .
