Puerto del Carmen is the most busy and most famous resort on Lanzarote. Hundreds of hotels and apartment complex welcomes frosty Europeans throughout the year. The coastline with the beautiful beaches are a place where pale Northern-Europeans are able to defrost when the winter is ravaging back home. Puerto del Carmen is also a surprisingly affordable beach destination, your money will stretch a little bit further here than compared to mainland Spain, and even Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
It's a perfect place to enjoy an uncomplicated and inexpensive holiday.
Along the main strip at Puerto Del Carmen there are many ways to spend your hard earned cash. If keeping the costs down, or getting value for money is your concern, then knowing where and how to save a little, can make a big difference on your holiday budget.
The most important thing first: A local pint of beer is likely to cost €2 at the cheapest places, and may cost as much as €5 on a fancy restaurant.
Meals are available from €6
Along the strip you can dine for €6 but be sure to look around for the best deals as there are many restaurants available with special offers. A €6 meal might consist of chicken and chips or a pasta dish; basic dinning. For a few euro’s extra at 10-12 euro’s you may enjoy a nice two course meal of your choice with a house bottle of wine. Beverages like soft drinks (€1-2), spirits (€3-6) beer (€2-5) and cocktails (€5-8) will cost extra on the price of the meal and are usually more expensive on the main strip as this is Lanzarote’s hot spot.
Hot tip to save money: Eat where the locals eat
For a better priced beverage or meal it is sometimes worth walking 5 or 10 minutes away from the main strip and out of the busy areas. It is also worth checking the local Canarian restaurants for their menu and price lists. They can offer good food for a good price and a beverage or meal can be cheaper. Bars and restaurants where the locals can be found relaxing are usually a little cheaper than the main holiday areas and it can be enjoyable watching, listening, and just taking in the personalities in a local restaurant or bar. You will be welcomed and you may save a euro or two!
Will it be cheap at the supermarkets?
Supermarkets can be more expensive if you buy the products and brands that you would normally buy at home. A lot of European brands are catered for but have been imported which pushes the cost up a little. Meat costs more by approximately 20% than meat at home, but fresh fruit and vegetables are slightly cheaper because most are grown on the Island.
The price level is not a reason to avoid visiting Puerto del Carmen. It's cheap and the whole resort is laid back and not very exclusive. It's a great place to enjoy a sunny and uncomplicated beach holiday. Enjoy your stay!
