Flying into rome, italy: airport options
Rome is one of Europe's oldest cities, with a rich history and world-famous attractions. However while there are numerous ways to get to the city including train and trans-continent driving, the most popular way to get to Rome is by plane.
Rome has two main airports – Fiumicino Airport (also known as Leonardo da Vinci Airport) and Ciampino Airport, and despite occasional strikes by baggage handlers, are two of the busiest airports in Europe, so it is important to know which one you're flying to so you can plan your holiday accordingly.
For UK visitors, the airport that is generally favoured is Ciampino Airport, mainly because it is serviced by Britain's main budget airlines – EasyJet and RyanAir. The two major airlines use Ciampino as a European base and flights from Gatwick, Nottingham, Bristol and Belfast all fly there. Despite being the smaller of Rome's two airports, Ciampino plays host to almost all of the continent's budget airlines and as such, is incredibly busy. In fact, a few years ago, the company that runs Ciampino said that they planned on reducing flights due to complaints from local residents about the constant noise!
It also picks up and drops people off at the Termini station in the centre of Rome.p>
Fiumicino, however, is Rome's 'Heathrow'. Located on the outskirts of the city, 16 miles to the south-west, the large airport is serviced by a number of train and bus services that take people out of the city easily and efficiently. To cater with the large number of visitors (estimated to be over 35 million per year), Fiumicino has four terminals, two of which cater for the large number of international flights. As you'd expect, due to its large popularity, the airport has a number of hotels, car rental services and public transport links to get tourists started on their dream holiday to Rome.
Whereas Caimpino is often favoured by more budget airlines, Fiumincino is visited by the continent's larger airlines, such as British Airways. However, due to its size it also takes a large number of budget airlines including Air Berlin, Condor, Aer Lingus and Norwegian Air. No matter where you live, Rome has an airport that you can fly to.
